The story behind getting Nirvana to sign my pickguard is as follows in the late 80's my friends and I would take road trips to Tijuana which is just across the border from San Diego and we discovered that not only was Tijuana a hot spot for under age drinking and other vices but also a hot spot for upcoming rock bands , so we would frequent Club Iguanas and bring our pick guards with us to get signed by the various baands that performed at the club some never amount to anything (many) and aa few become legendary such as Nirvana which I have here
In the early nineties, Tijuana had a place that still lives in the memory of many: Iguana's. This place, located just steps from the border with San Diego, was the scene of legendary concerts with tickets that cost $10. Among all the bands that played there, none left a mark quite like Nirvana. Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Chad Channing's first visit was on February 17, 1990, when they already had their first album, Bleach, in hand. Just a year later, they returned two more times: on July 15 alongside Dinosaur Jr. and on October 24 with Hole. Three nights that are now part of the musical mythology of the city, with tickets that would be equivalent to about 205 current pesos.
El Iguana's was not an ordinary place. It had three levels, balconies, and a patio where people drank before entering a concert that, according to journalist John D'Agostino of the LA Times, was 'fifteen minutes from San Diego, but light years away from any parental supervision.' It opened in May 1989 with Stevie B and When in Rome, and in just four years saw giants like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Sepultura, and The Ramones pass through.Its story ended quickly, in 1993, amid unconfirmed rumors about an incident at a Sepultura show. However, its legacy as a meeting point for live music and as a breeding ground for new bands in Tijuana remains intact.What was once a small border bar is now remembered as the place where, for just a few bucks, you could see Nirvana before they conquered the world.
